Follow American Airlines and go off the beaten path in Lima. When you’ve had your fill of the bustling Peruvian capital, head to Cusco, gateway to the Andes mountains and Amazon jungle, or join Limeños on the southern beaches of Pucusana or Punta Hermosa. American is with you every step of the way.
Take a tour to Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire. Located in southeastern Peru, it became the seat of Spanish colonization in the Andes after 1532, and today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the Palace of Inca Roca and Korikancha, the San Blas neighborhood and the archaeological ruins surrounding the city.
Hop on a combi (minibus) with sun-worshipping Limeños to any of the southern beaches, most popular during the Peruvian summer from December to March. The most attractive are Pucusana, a small fishing village with small brown sand beaches and calm waters around the harbor, and Punta Hermosa, with popular beachfront eateries serving delicious fresh local fish and ceviche.
Allow for at least a few hours to visit the pre-Columbian ruins of Pachacámac, the best preserved site within easy reach of Lima. If you had been an Inca conquering this site in the 15th century, you would have been arriving 1,500 years after the earliest constructions here. The Incas made Pachacámac one of the most important shrines in the Americas.
Take a combi or taxi to Pisac in the Urubamba Valley, also known as the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Bargain for your favorite ceramics or any of the intricate handicrafts in the colorful artisans’ market, busiest on Sundays with smaller outdoor markets on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Have lunch on the main square and then hike up to the Inca ruins above town offering magnificent panoramas of this charming Andean village.
Begin your trip to Machu Picchu in Aguas Calientes, the hot springs town that sits 3.7 miles below the famous “Lost City of the Incas.” Surrounded by tropical jungle, the small town, with simple hotels, restaurants and bars, was built around the railway that cuts through it. Arrive by train from Cusco and stay here for the night before hitting Machu Picchu at sunrise.
